Winnie (Hutsell) Axley

February 8, 1926 ~ May 14, 2020 (age 94)


Mary Winona “ Winnie” (Hutsell) Axley passed peacefully on May 14th, 2020 at the age of 94 at Life Care Center of Athens, Tennessee.  She was loved by her family and friends and will be missed dearly.

Winnie was born on  February 8th, 1926  to the late Clyde and Sarah Hutsell and was preceded in death by her husband, Grayson; her sisters, Blanche Landers and Caroline Elliott; and her  brothers, Charles, Bennett, John, Joe, and Don Hutsell.

She is survived by her daughter, Sheila Black; her grandson, Steve Grayson Black and wife, Ashley; her granddaughter, Robin (Black) Hopkins and husband, Rob; and her 6 grandchildren, Grayson, Lauren, and Carson Black, Lily Phillips, as well as Chandler and Brooklyn Hopkins.  She is also survived by her sister, Betsy Elliott and husband, Cecil; and brother, Roy Hutsell and wife, Jennifer.

Winona “Winnie” Axley grew up in the Tranquility community and attended Sewee Church of God.   She was employed by Park Avenue Laundry and Cleaners, Citizens Bank,  and Chandlers Fabrics while residing in Athens, Tennessee.  So many have been blessed with one of her many quilts, and a little of Winnie’s love was put into each one.

Under the circumstances in which we are living, her family plans to hold a celebration of  her life at a later date.   In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Winnie to the McMinn Senior Activity Center, 205 McMinn Avenue, Athens, TN  37303.  Please share remembrances and/or condolences through  Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home at or send cards to 584 Co Rd 218, Niota, TN  37826.
