Mildred Hutsell Gussow

    MILDRED HUTSELL GUSSOW, age 88 of Athens, Tenn. passed away Saturday, June 1, 2019, in Hospice of Chattanooga. She was a native and resident of Athens
most of her life, daughter of the late John Terry Hutsell and Ida Ruth Reno Marle, and preceded in death by her Husband: Abraham Jacob Gussow on May 15,
1997, Son: James "Bobby" Evans, Step Father: Edd Marler,  Brother: J. C. Hutsell, Sister: Johnny Ruth Royster,  and special grandparents: James R. and Kate Reno.

      An employee of Damy Garment Manufacturing Industries, U. S. A., along with her late husband, she was a designer and trainer at various manufacturing plants in the United States and abroad. She was a member, former Sunday School teacher and nursery attendant at East Athens Baptist Church.  She was a graduate of the Hospice Program at Woods Memorial Hospital.
She enjoyed writing poetry and had several poems published. She was active in the Basic Literacy Program in McMinn County and a tutor for students taking the SAT test. She was the recipient of the Governor's Award "Literacy of Tennessee in 1982" and the Governor's Award " For the Hiring and Training of the Handicapped in 1978."

Survivors include:

  • Four Daughters and Son-in-law:  Patty and Gary Humphries of Chattanooga, Tenn. Emma Jo McKenzie of Decatur, Tenn. Julia O'Connell of Chilie, Sarah Gussow of Hixson, Tenn.  
  • Brother and Sister-in-law: Dean and Elaine Hutsell of Fernandina Beach, Fla.
  • Five grandchildren: Sarah Jewell,Karen (Travis) Johnson, Ryann (Ron) Norman, Sally O'Connell, and Danny O'Connell  
  • Five Great Grandchildren: Austin Jewell, Autumn Jewell,  Caitlyn Hill, Ethan Hill, and Olivia Norman
  • Several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, June 6, 2019 in the Chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with Chaplain Bill Bond officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery.  Active pallbearers will be Gary Humphries, Ron Norman, Travis Johnson, Ethan Hill, Eddie Jewell, and Mike Palmer. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM. to 2:00 P.M. Thursday in the funeral home.
