James William Miller

James William Miller

James W. Miller, age 89, of Englewood, passed away Thursday, December 19, 2019 at Starr Regional Medical Center of Athens. A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was the son of the late William Dan and Ruth Jerells Miller. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Athens, a veteran of the Korean War having served in the U.S Army, and was retired from Mayfields Dairy. He was an avid reader and was a Bus Driver for Athens City schools for 20 years.

He was preceded in death by:

  • His son, Jeffery Lynn Miller December 20, 2013;
  • Granddaughter, Calliope Carriker,
  • Sister, Mary Evelyn Walker.

Survivors include:

  • Wife of  69 years, Anna Ruth Torbett Miller of Engelwood;
  • Daughter, Lisa Ann Miller Soto of Athens;
  • Three grandchildren, Bethany Ann Carriker, Matthew Soto, and Michael Soto. 
  • Two great-grandchildren, Mayson Soto, Penelope Carriker.

Funeral services will be 7:00 pm Friday, Dec. 27, 2019 in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Dr. Bill Henard and Rev. Tim Ellis officiating.

The graveside service will be 11:00 am Saturday, Dec. 28, 2019 at McMinn Memory Gardens.

The pallbearers will be Rodney Parrott, Scott Oliver, Mike Shell, Matthew Soto, Michael Soto, Roberto Garcia.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 pm before the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions maybe sent to the Alzheimers Association and the First Baptist Church of Athens Library Fund.
