John David "J.D." Nelson

JOHN DAVID "J. D." NELSON,  age 93 of Athens, Tenn. passed away Sunday, July 8, 2018, in Starr Regional Heath and Rehab in Etowah, Tenn.

He was a native of Meigs County, Tn., resident of McMinn County, Tenn. since 1952, a son of the late Tarry and Callie Brandon Nelson.  He retired from TVA Watts Bar. He was a member of North Athens Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School Teacher, Meridan Sun Lodge #50 F&AM and Scottish Rite. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U. S. Army and enjoyed golf and the Atlanta Braves.

He was preceded in death by:

  • Wife: Loretta Irene Mullins on June 6, 2001,
  • Daughter: June Deborah "Debby" Nelson on July 1, 1979, 
  • Two Brothers: Newton (Nute) Nelson, and T. J. Nelson,
  • Four sisters: Ethel Chambers, Betty Melcher, Martha Venia Beason, and Nandine Nelson.

Survivors: 

  • Two Sisters: Faye Hutton of Athens, Tenn., Wilma Shephard of Florida several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, July 12, 2018 in the Chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Brandon officiating.

Interment will follow in McMinn Memory Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Douglas Beason, Joshua Beason, Terry Smith, and Doug Massey.

The family will receive friends from 12:00-2:00 P.M. Thursday in the funeral home.
