John Elwood Barnes

JOHN ELWOOD BARNES, age 93 of Athens, Tenn. passed away Sunday, Oct. 25, 2026 at his residence. He was a native of Jerome, Idaho, a resident most of his life of McMinn County, a son of the late John Wilson and Margaret Sliger Barnes and preceded in death by his wife: Martha Ann Finley Barnes and Sister: Mildred Nye. He was retired from Bowater Paper Corp. and was an avid Bowler. He was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors: Daughter and son-in-law: Vonica (Tony) Hall of Niota, Tenn., Three Sons and daughters-in-law: Bobby Barnes of Moody, Ala., Billy (Jenny) Barnes of Odenville, Ala., Terry (Virginia) Barnes of Pell City, Ala. Seven Grandchildren, Nine Great Grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday in McMinn Memory Gardens with Rev. Jimmy Ledis officiating. Active pallbearers will be Grandchildren. There will be no formal visitation.
