Joe Roger Cockrell, age 83, of Athens passed away Saturday, October 3, 2026 surrounded by his family at home. A native of Etowah and a resident of McMinn County all of his life, he was the son of the late Joe and Eva Gentry Cockrell. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and one of the early member of Chilhowee Rod and Gun Club. He was an expert marksman, and served 38 years in the U.S. Army and National Guard, retiring in 2003. He was preceded in death by his step-son, Stacey Buckner.
He was survived by his Wife of 36 years Nidavann Carroll Cockrell of Athens;
two great granddaughters, Jayden and Noah Roberts of Athens, Emily and David Roberts; two great-great granddaughters, Azriella Roberts, Faith Roberts; one special daughter-in-law Rhonda Herd.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Thursday, October 8, 2026 in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home. The funeral will follow at 7 pm with Rev. Donnie Dalton officiating. The burial will be 2 pm Friday, October 9, 2026 at McMinn Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Noah Roberts, David Roberts, Todd Carroll, David Edgeman,Tommy Cockrell and Randy Cockrell.
