Joe Axley, age 75 of Athens, passed away at his residence Wednesday, April 29, 2026 surrounded by his family and friends. A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was the son of the late Odean Axley and Virginia Fisher Snyder. Joe was an active member of Central Baptist Church and retired from Bell South after 32 years. Joe was a 1968 graduate of McMinn County HIgh School, where he exceled in basketball and baseball. He earned a scholarship and attended Cleveland State Community College where he played both basketball and baseball. In his adult life, he became an avid runner, completing the Boston Marathon in 2001 and 2002 . He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play sports. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Cole Puryear Sisters Jeannie, Cindy, and Lisa.
Joe was survived by one son, Eric Axley (fiance Nicole Webb)of Knoxville, and one daughter Cayci Farmer (Grant) of Riceville; three grandchildren, Cade Puryear, Bray Farmer, and Skylah Axley. Brother, Bill (Kathy) Snyder. Several Nieces and Nephews.
There will be a visitation from 2-4 pm Sunday, May 3, 2026 at Central Baptist Church, and the graveside service 2:00 pm Monday, May 4, 2026 at McMinn Memory Gardens with the Rev. Mike Bernard and Rev. Joe Haun officiating.
