James "J.R" Raymond Griggs

James Raymond "J.R." Griggs, age 82 of Athens, stepped through the gates of Heaven, surrounded by family, Saturday, April 11, 2026 at Starr Regional Health and Rehab Center of Etowah. A native of Pulaski, Tennessee and a resident of McMinn County since 1972, he was the son of the late Freeman and Mary Etta Hazelwood Griggs. James served in the U.S. Army with the Signal Corp, and worked at TVA Watts Bar Nuclear Plant as an Engineer. Notably he had a part in working on the Swing Arms for the Saturn V. James also was a member of Allen Memorial United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendant. He was loving known as "Papaw" and a friend to everyone he met. He often spent his time grilling out, boating and traveling, and living his life to the fullest. Spending time with his grandchildren, children and friends was a highlight of his life.

He is survived by one daughter Anna Marie Fields (Jeff ) of Athens; grandchildren, Amanda Croft (Steven), Jeffery Hunter Fields, Kelsey Fields; great grandchild Bella Croft; and loved ones Marie Griggs Bradley (Mike); and many dear friends and family.

" I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day, and not to me only, but unto all of them also that love his appearing." II Timothy 4:7-8

A Celebration of Life Service will be announced at a later date.
