Hubert "Larry" Thornton

Hubert "Larry" Thornton age 80 of Athens, passed away Monday, February 11, 2019 at his residence. A native and lifelong resident of Athens, he was the son of the late Hubert Columbus and Elizabeth  Barnes Thornton. He was of the baptist faith and was retired from Johnson Controls after 23 years of employment. He and his wife were the owner and operator of the former "Ceramic Shop." He was an avid car restorer and collector. 

He was preceded in death by:

  • An infant son Larry Neil Thornton;
  • Three brothers, Billy Thornton, Glen Thornton, and Mike Thornton.
  • One sister Lois Gaut.

Survivors include:

  • Wife of 56 years, Wilma Thornton of Athens
  • Two sons and daughter-in-laws, Scott and Darlene Thornton of Englewood; Darrell and Sandra Thornton of Athens
  • One daughter; Angel Gable of Decatur
  • Five Grandchildren, Nathan Thornton,  Eric Thornton, Paige Gable, Wyatt Gable and Alexis Thornton,
  • Two Great-grandchildren, Aiden Thornton, Alistair Thornton
  • Several nieces and nephews
  • One brother and sister-in-law; Kenny and Rita Thornton of Etowah,
  • 4 Sisters and brothers-in-law; Lucille Henry of Decatur, Helen and Ted Greene of Riceville, Gail and Spencer Roper of Georgia, Wanda and Maurice McKinney of Athens.

Funeral service will be 7:00 pm Tuesday, February 12, 2019 in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with Rev. Jeffrey Haney and Glen Standridge officiating.

The interment will be 11:00 am Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at Pond Hill Cemetery.

The pallbearers will be friends and family.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Tuesday before the service.

Many years pass until one day we receive news of a loved one passing over to peace. Until today I did not know Uncle Larry was named after his dad. I apologize for missing so many opportunities available to me to get know my Uncle better. Wilma, please accept my sincere condolences. Uncle Larry and you hold a special place in my heart and memories as a child. You both helped me through a difficult time in my young life. I love you, thank you and may God bless you dearly.
