David Lamar Giles, age 85 of Athens went to be with the Lord, Friday February13. 2026 at his son's residence. A native of Chattanooga, and a resident of McMinn County for the past 8 years, he was the son of the late James Herbert, Sr. and Ora Mae Ball Giles. David was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Niota where he led the choir, and was formerly a deacon at Friendship Baptist Church of Hixson, TN. He worked for Red Bank Police Department, Combustion Engineering and retired from Hamilton County Sheriffs Department. He was an avid Tennessee sports fan, and in his younger years he built and raced dirt cars. He was the Voice of the Red Bank Lions for 20 years. One of David's favorite past times was singing and playing the piano which he did with excellence. Most of all, he loved his family and his precious wife Alice of 66 years. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Sarah Combs and Mary Potts; and brothers, Jimmy Giles, Jr. and Bobby Giles.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years Alice Giles of Athens; sons, David A. Giles of Athens, Steve Giles (Stacey) of Rossville, Ga,Tim Giles (Lori) of Athens; daughter, Michelle Snyder (Dee) Chattanooga; 10 grandchildren, Alicia, Hannah, Cheryl, Carmen, Joseph, Josh, Savanna, Brianna, Ansley and Jacob; 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, February 17, 2026 from 4-8 pm in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home. The funeral service will be 11 am Wednesday, February 18, 2026 with the Rev Chad Hester, and brother Josh Hill officiating. The graveside service will be 1 pm Wednesday following the service at McDonald Cemetery in Ooltewah, TN. The pallbearers will be Brian, Ashburn, Jacob Giles, Joseph Giles, Nick Horvath, Melvin Giles, Michael Williams.
