Bill Martin

Bill Martin, age 73, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 29, 2020 after battling complications from cancer.  He taught physical education at Athens City Middle School for 40 years, continuing to serve as Athletic Director after he retired.  Teaching, Coaching, and mentoring students was his passion, and he felt blessed to work with so many wonderful people in the school system.  Bill was a long-time member of Athens Church of Christ, a quiet and humble servant of the Lord.  He was also a loving husband to his high school sweetheart, Janice, for 39 years and a wonderful father and grandfather.  Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Janice, and a brother, Tim.  He will be greatly missed by his sister Janet (Al); children Rob (Shannon), Sara (Robbie), Bethany, and Manda (Greg);  and grandchildren Kate, Lauren, Brianna, and Emily.  Sister-in-law: Gail.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2020 at  5 pm at Athens Church of Christ with Minister Mark Littleton officiating.  Due to COVID-19, there will be no visitation and seating will adhere to social distancing guidelines.

To Bill Jrs family especially his sister Janet, I am so sorry to hear of his passing. He was my oldest cousin on my father ( Ralph Martin) side of the family. My sister and I remember playing more with his brother Timothy since Bill Jr was quite a few years older than us but I do remember watching him play baseball in McMinnville at the baseball field behind our house. Bill, say hi to Grandma and Grandpa Martin, your Dad and my dad ... your Uncle Ralph. What a reunion you will have.

Bill was a fine man and tremendous educator. We were blessed to have him as a member of the ACS family. Over the years, students and colleagues benefited from his wisdom, mentoring, and professionalism. Bill will truly be missed.

Rob, Sara. Manda and Bethany, I'm so very sorry to hear of your loss. I think so much of your family and all the kindness you have shown me over the years. I'll always remember running into Bill and Pete the dog several times on the Regional Park trail! I don't know who was having more fun. Please know that I'm thinking of each of you and wish you peace and blessings during this difficult time. Take good care and God bless.

"A good coach can change a game. A great coach can change a life." Coach Martin was a great coach. He knew how to relate to his team and each individual on it, drawing out the best in them not only athletically, but more importantly as young men. Rest in peace Coach.

We sure did love him as well as all of you. Some of our best memories at Athens Church were of Bill and Janice. They were humble servants who showed kindness to all. We will hold all of you in our hearts and prayers.

Bill and I have been friends since we were 12. I really hated to hear this. My love and sympathy to the family. Pat Norton Bryan.

I went to school with Bill and truly treasured his friendship. He would come visit McMinnville every June and a group of us would get together and enjoy one anothers company always believing in staying in touch with one another. Bill was a kind, gentle man who was as honorable and humble as they come. I will miss knowing he is no longer with us. I will say a prayer now for his family and hold onto the fact that he will be in heaven when we all get there.

I knew Bill Martin for most of my life. He was one of the best person I have ever known. He was kind, gentle and a faithful Christian until the day he died.
I know he and Janice are now in heaven.
She was also a loving person who made a great home for Bill and their children. I know he will be greatly missed.
