Thomas Edward Brackett, 77, of Athens, died Monday, July 2, 2007, at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga.


A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Thomas Edward Brackett Sr. and the late Ollie Slack Brackett Newton. He was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Brackett; and one sister, Doris Haynes. He was a member of Clearwater Baptist Church, Meigs Masonic Lodge No. 213 F&AM and Scottish Rite, and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a retired design engineer for Volunteer Electric for 37 years, retiring in 1990.


Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Peggy Moses Brackett of Athens; one son, Tommy Brackett of Athens; three daughters and sons-in-law, Pat and Clinton Rogers of Athens, Debbie and Roger Cantrell of Riceville, and Dee and Pete Lamb of Ramseur, N.C.; one brother, Roy Brackett of Blountville; one sister, Sheila Brackett of Bristol; eight grandchildren and spouses, Brian and Consuela Cantrell, Lan and Dana Barnes, Jeff and Gerri Le Cantrell, Zach Lamb, Stephanie and Robert Todd, Nikki Lamb, Jillian Lamb, and Samantha and Joe McCoy; and eight great-grandchildren, Cami, Chelsea, Montana, Monica, Brooke, Nicholas, Joshua and Bryan.


Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Clearwater Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Bryant and the Rev. Mickey Basham officiating. Burial will follow in Clearwater Cemetery.


Pallbearers will be Brian Cantrell, Jeff Cantrell, Alan Barnes, Tommy Brackett, Zach Lamb and Jeff Brackett. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home. The body will lie in-state at the church for one hour prior to the service.
