Rev. Sim T. "S.T." "Mack" McGinnis, 87, of Athens, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at NHC Health Care of Athens.
He was born Sept. 16, 1920, in Commerce, Ga., to the late Sim T. McGinnis Sr. and Hattie Driver McGinnis, and was preceded in death by one brother, Walter McGinnis; and one sister, Kathleen Buckhannon. He was a member of Freedom Baptist Church and was an ordained Baptist minister. He graduated from Fruitland Bible Baptist Institute of Hendersonville, N.C., and Southern Bible Institute of Knoxville. He also was a graduate of Simmons Theological Seminary with a doctorate in theology and a doctorate of divinity.
He taught prophesy at Simmons Theological Seminary in Cleveland, Ohio. He was builder and pastor of five Southern Baptist churches and pastored churches in six states. He was an avid lover of Southern Gospel singing, and was a member of Masonic National Lodge 568 of Barberton, Ohio, and a Shriner of Tadmore Temple of Akron, Ohio.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Liston McGinnis of Athens; two stepsons and their wives, DeWayne and Connie Liston of Mogadore, Ohio, and David and Carol Liston of Wadsworth, Ohio; two step-grandsons, J.D. and Kevin Liston; three step-granddaughters, Bethany, Rebekah and Deborah Liston; five step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Eugene McGinnis of Alexandria, Va., and Hugh Lee McGinnis of Vader, Wash.; one sister, Hilda Arnold of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; and a host of friends across America.
Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy Hogan, the Rev. Ted Watson and Ray Priest officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Charles McNelley, Mel Barker, Eddie Watson, Todd Baines, Carl Richeson, Jonathan Watson, Tyler Forrest and Andy Priest.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
