Gilbert Reed Brakebill, 91, of Niota, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2008.
A native of Monroe County, and a resident of McMinn County for most of his life, he was a son of the late Joseph Edgar Sr. and Minnie Jane Harris Brakebill. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Cody Hood; one sister, Gladys Irene Allen; and three brothers, Lewis B. Brakebill, Thomas E. Brakebill and Joseph Edgar \"Joe\" Brakebill Jr. He was a member of East Niota Baptist Church and was a tomato grower.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Beatrice McCarter Brakebill of Niota, to whom he would have been married 70 years on Oct. 7, 2008; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Barbara Kerl of Athens, Wanda June and Norman Hardy of Newnan, Ga., Mary Linda and John R. Hood of Atlanta, Ga., and Betty Jane and Dr. Ben Coffey of Athens; one son and daughter-in-law, Paul Gilbert and Sandra Brakebill of Niota; one sister and brother-in-law, Edith and James Linkie of Sunset Beach, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with the Rev. Bruce Newman officiating. Entombment services were 11 a.m. Monday at the McMinn Memory Gardens Mausoleum.
The family received friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
