George L. "Tex" Chambers, 92, died Friday, May 2, 2008, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
A native of Oklahoma City, Okla., and a former resident of Belvidere, N.J., he has resided in McMinn County since 2007, and was a son of the late Charles and Velda Byrd Chambers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Pittman Chambers.
He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army, and was a member of the American Legion Post in Belvidere, N.J., and Past Master of Belvidere Masonic Lodge. He was also a well known dog trainer whose dog, "Mr. Troubles" played "Blitz" in the movie "Trail Blazers" with Alan Hale Jr., played checkers with Red Skelton on TV, played the part of "Nameless" in the movie "Come, Fill The Cup" with James Cagney and was a guest of TV star Merv Griffin on the popular TV show "Play Your Hunch."
Survivors include three sons and one daughter-in-law, Charles Chambers of Easton, Pa., Frank and Lisa Chambers of Kunkletown, Pa., and George Chambers Jr. of Dalhart, Texas; three daughters and one son-in-law, Georgia Riddle of Nutley, N.J., Debora and Hansel "Rod" Elrod of Delano, and Linda Mullett of Chardon, Ohio; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with Harold Haddock officiating. Burial will be in El Reno Cemetery in El Reno, Okla.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Services in El Reno, Okla. will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Huber-Benson Funeral Home with visitation on Wednesday evening.
