Mr. Ben P. DeWitt, age 86, of Niota, died Monday, June 25, 2007 at his home.

A member of Valley View Baptist Church, he was a past City Recorder for the City of Niota.  He was a member and Past Master of Meridian Sun Lodge #50 F. & A.M. and past member of Athenian Chapter #159 O.E.S.  He was a Veteran of World War II, having served as a Medical Technician in Italy and Africia for 28 months.  He received several awards, including the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon with 2 Bronze stars.  He was retired from Niota Textile and son of the late "F.A." Arthur and Cora Sluder DeWitt, he was preceded in death by 5 sisters, Sally DeWitt, Lela DeWitt, Willa Mae Martin, Kate Buckner and Jewel Shell; and 3 brothers, Ralph DeWitt, L. L. DeWitt and Clarence Stanley.

Survivors: Wife, Louise Cobble DeWitt, to whom he would have been married 61 years on June 29, 2007. Daughter & son-in-law: Linda and Alan McAmis of Sweetwater, TN.  Grandsons: Brooks Alan McAmis: Aaron McAmis and Wife, Kendrick of Atlanta, GA.  Sister, Willie Knox, age 98, of Niota, TN.  Several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 8:00 P.M. Wednesday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Kelley officiating. 

Masonic Services by Meridian Sun Lodge # 50 F.& A.M. will follow the funeral service.

Graveside services will be 10:00 Wednesday. 

The family will receive friends from 6-8 P.M. at Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home in Athens, TN.

Memorial contributions maybe made to the Alzhemiers Association, Southeast Tennessee Chapter, 735 Broad St., Suite 300; Chattanooga, TN 37402.
