Athel Robert "Red" Tallent, 86, of Athens, and formerly of Etowah, died Monday, March 10, 2008, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late William Harvey and Maggie Carroll Tallent, and was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Raper Tallent, on Jan. 5, 2007; one son, James Robert Tallent, on Jan. 18, 1994; two sisters, Ethel Fain and Dorothy Lance; and three brothers, Ray Tallent, the Rev. Virgil Tallent and Rankin Tallent. He was a member of Rocky Mt. Baptist Church and was a retired employee of the L N Railroad. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, and was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal.
Survivors include one daughter-in-law, Betty Joyce McPhail Tallent of Athens; one grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Jeff C. and Connie Young of Niota; one granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Paige and David Cantrell of Athens; one great-grandson, Matthew Christian Young; two great-granddaughters, Amison Marie Young and Lauren Lee Cantrell, both of Athens; two brothers, Burkett Tallent and Harvey Tallent, both of Etowah; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be noon Thursday at McMinn Memory Gardens with the Rev. Greg Harper and the Rev. Jerry Plaster officiating.
Active pallbearers will be Jerry Fain, Matthew Young, David Cantrell, Jeff Young, Arnold Tallent, Daniel Tallent and Dale Tallent.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home.
