Bertha Ellen Morgan Thompson, 87, of Athens, died Thursday, June 3, 2010, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
A native of Rhea County, and a resident of McMinn County for most of her life, she was a daughter of the late Lawson Earl "L.E." and Uvah Barger Morgan, and was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Thompson Jr., on Oct. 5, 2009. She was retired from Athens City Schools, having taught at Westside, Athens Junior High and Ingleside Schools.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She and her husband were UMYF counselors and together led a youth mission trip to Haiti. Then she led a youth mission trip into eastern Kentucky as part of the Appalachian Service Project. She served as a member of the Trinity Altar Guild and was a member of the Kathryn Eye Circle. She was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and was a former volunteer with CONTACT.
Survivors include one son, Mark Thompson of Nashville; one brother and sister-in-law, James L. and Joann Morgan of San Diego, Calif.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Brown officiating. Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday in McMinn Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Rush Guthrie, Josh Guthrie, Bill Carlton, Rick Belk, Gene Belk and Mark Thompson.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
